The Owerri Zone Football Association has begun moves to reclaim its place in football administration following renewed efforts to reposition the body within the state’s football structure.
This development follows a strategic meeting between the Coordinator of Owerri Zone Football Association, Emeka Ekwutosi, and the Chairman of Imo State Football Association, Ifeanyi Dike, held at the FA House in Owerri.
According to information made available to the media, the association is making plans to reappoint credible stakeholders from across the zone into key administrative roles, a move aimed at strengthening grassroots football governance.
As part of the restructuring, Uche Agumo has been named to represent Ahiazu Mbaise as an administrator, following the demise of the former office holder. In the same vein, Vitalis Chikere has been appointed to represent Owerri Zone on the FA Board.
The latest appointments signal a deliberate effort to restore Owerri Zone’s influence and active participation in football affairs, as the zone positions itself to regain relevance among leading football communities in Imo State.
Meanwhile, in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, Kennedy Onwunali, who has served in an acting capacity for several years, has now been officially confirmed as the substantive coordinator of the local Football Association.
His appointment follows what stakeholders described as a successful tenure marked by stability and grassroots development.
With these developments, stakeholders believe Owerri Zone is on course to reestablish itself as a key driver of football administration and development within the state.
Also present at the meeting were Hon Onyema Ofurum of Owerri North and Sir Alwel Njemanze of Owerri Municipal, further underscoring the broad-based support for the ongoing restructuring process.
