Football has been identified as a strategic instrument for unity, youth empowerment and sustainable regional development in Northwest Nigeria.
A critical stakeholder of the Rangers International F.C. Foundation, Abubakar Magaji Yabo (Sarkin Yamma Yabo), said the sport remains one of the most effective platforms for engaging young people positively and fostering peace across diverse communities.
According to him, football transcends ethnic, religious and socio-economic divides, offering a shared identity that promotes social cohesion and collective pride.
“In a region blessed with energetic and talented youths, structured sports development is no longer optional but essential,” he said.
“Football provides a pathway for discovering and nurturing talent while instilling discipline, teamwork, leadership and perseverance — values that are critical for nation-building.”
He noted that many young people in the Northwest face unemployment, limited mentorship opportunities and inadequate platforms to showcase their abilities, stressing that grassroots football initiatives could help bridge the gap.
Yabo explained that the Rangers International F.C. Foundation is positioned to expand its impact beyond competitive football by driving community-based programmes such as grassroots tournaments, school partnerships, coaching clinics and mentorship sessions.
He emphasized the need for collaboration among local authorities, private sector partners and community leaders to build sustainable sports structures capable of benefiting future generations.
The stakeholder also underscored the importance of infrastructure development, including functional training facilities, youth academies and community football hubs, noting that such investments would not only provide safe spaces for development but also stimulate economic activities within host communities.
“Football can serve as a bridge of unity in a diverse nation like Nigeria. Support for a common club can break down barriers that politics often creates,” he added.
He called for greater commitment, transparency and measurable impact from stakeholders, urging increased corporate sponsorship and policy support for sports as a tool for long-term development.
With coordinated planning and visionary leadership, he expressed optimism that the Rangers International F.C. Foundation could emerge as a catalyst for positive change in Northwest Nigeria.
“Football is not just about scoring goals; it is about building lives and strengthening communities,” he stated, calling for sustained unity and focus among stakeholders.
