The Federal High Court, Abuja, will tomorrow, Monday, November 3, 2025, hear a suit filed by the Greater Mbaise Development Forum (GMDF) against the Minister of Power, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) over the alleged abandonment of the Mbaise Power Transmission Project located at Ibeku, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, Imo State.
The legal action follows the fact-finding visit of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions to Mbaise in 2024, after receiving complaints of prolonged blackout and the neglect of the area’s electricity transmission project.
In the motion ex-parte filed through Chief Malachy C. Nwaekpe of M.C. Chambers, the Forum is seeking leave to apply for an order of mandamus compelling the Federal Government agencies to complete the long-abandoned project, which has deprived the Mbaise District—comprising seven local government areas—of electricity since 2009.
Counsel to the Forum, Chief Nwaekpe, said the suit became necessary after years of the defendants’ refusal and/or neglect to act despite several petitions and legislative interventions. The convener, Prof. Polycarp U. Nwhoha, expressed optimism that the court would “uphold justice and ensure that Mbaise receives its fair share of national infrastructure.”
The case is scheduled for hearing tomorrow, Monday, November 3, 2025, before the Federal High Court, Abuja.
