Ex-internationals and former Super Eagles players will slug it out in a friendly match against Imo Legends as part of activities marking the 25th anniversary of the Kanu Nwankwo Foundation.
This was disclosed by the Coordinator of the 2025 edition, Mo Mohammed, during a briefing with members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Imo State chapter.
According to him, the Foundation, established in 2000, has lined up various activities to make the celebration memorable, with the football match serving as a major highlight.
Notable ex-internationals expected to feature include Emmanuel Amuneke, Ifeanyi Ekwueme, Kanu Nwankwo, Victor Ikpeba, Uche Okechukwu, Mobi Oparaku, and Obinna Nwaneri. They will lock horns with the Imo Legends in a friendly game scheduled for Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, by 3:00 p.m. The encounter is expected to attract dignitaries from far and wide.
Mohammed further revealed that the theme of this year’s anniversary is “Hope for a Healthy Heart Walk.” As part of the programme, there will be a 5km walk, beginning from the Kanu Nwankwo Sports Centre in Owerri, on Monday, September 29, 2025, in the morning.
In addition, free medical checkups, including blood pressure and heart screenings, will be offered to participants. He emphasized that walking remains one of the best forms of exercise for maintaining a healthy heart.
The Coordinator also solicited support from well-meaning Nigerians and stakeholders to sustain the Foundation’s life-saving activities. He appealed to residents of Owerri and its environs to turn out in large numbers for both the friendly match and the health walk.
For the past 25 years, the Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation has successfully carried out surgeries for numerous individuals with complex heart conditions.
